In the last couple of years, we have seen global pandemic, war in Ukraine and now a cost-of-living crisis. The daily doom and gloom we are bombarded with can be suffocating and depressing. Most of us could be worrying about how we will survive financially (and mentally!) in the coming years.
In 2008, when the entire economy collapsed, the world seemed like it was destined to years of financial ruin. Nobody felt optimistic or hopeful, and the future was uneasy and uncertain. During that time, two new innovative companies emerged that would become household names and change the way that business operated. Airbnb started in 2008, and Uber began in 2009.Crisis cause motivation to change and if it had not been for those incredibly challenging times, then perhaps we wouldn't have a lot of the conveniences we enjoy today.
Like the crash of 2008, the COVID-19 pandemic has created uncertainty for most businesses. However, hard times are brilliant for innovation. When the markets are booming, everyone can make money doing mediocre work and there is little need to think outside the box (apologies…cliché). Facing a crisis forces business owners to start looking at fundamentals to adapt and develop new ways to support customers and capital.
Going back to the success of Airbnb and Uber; how did they do it you might ask? The basis and main Unique Selling Point of their business models are about giving customers exactly what they want with ease and convenience. This includes listening carefully to their customers, providing value for money and building on existing relationships. Those who use both services tend to be very loyal and regular customers, therefore they're clearly doing something right!
